Recently, I’ve had a few girl friends ask me for some fitness and nutrition advice. I love it when people come to me with their questions. It means they are taking a step in the right direction to a healthier lifestyle and I could not be happier to help. It also means we are coming up on swimsuit season. There always seems to be a rush of fitness questions around this time of year. But hey! I don’t blame them, who doesn’t want to look good in a swimsuit?
One of my biggest tips for any client or friend is to write down EVERYTHING. Write down what you eat and drink everyday. Write down when you workout, what kind of workout and for how long. Most importantly, write down your meals for the week. All of these things will help keep you accountable to your plan and goals. You will be amazed at how a pencil and paper can help get you into better shape.
Start by keeping a food journal for a few days. Find out what you are consuming too much of and also lacking in your diet. Water consumption is very important to keep track of. Many of my clients don’t drink enough water throughout the day. Leaving them not only dehydrated, but also more hungry…which invariably leads to mindless snacking. If you are able to keep track of your nutrition and start planning your meals throughout the week you will be able to turn lofty goals into smaller, daily action items. You will be amazed at what you can achieve.
My workouts are always more consistent when I have a journal. If I see on the calendar that I have missed a couple days, I know I need to get my butt into the gym. Or on the other hand, if I see I have worked out everyday for the past 5 days, I know I can give myself a break. Giving your body and mind a break is crucial to sticking with a fitness routine. Too many people workout insane for the first few weeks, then get burnt out and never pick it back up. Getting fit and living a healthy lifestyle is a marathon…not a sprint.
