Raise your hand if you are currently dealing with tension and pain in your body. Did you know you can relieve stress without leaving your house or paying a crazy amount of money at a spa? Lucky for you, today I am sharing my experience trying out the popular Spoonk Organic Hemp Acupressure Mat!
Since giving birth to my second son, I have dealt with sciatica issues (in addition to the usual stress that accompanies newborns). After talking to my doctor, one of the things she recommended was acupuncture or acupressure. I had not experienced either before, so I was not too sure what to expect. Would it hurt? Is it worth it?
As fate would have it, I was given the opportunity to try out the Spoonk Acupressure Mat. The pressure stimulated by the Spoonk mat is said to provide powerful relaxation, sleep induction, and back pain treatment in just 20 minutes, at home or on the go.
While many people have raved about their results of diminishing chronic pain, restlessness and even reducing their depression, I was still a little hesitant.
Since I am by no means an expert, I wanted to do a little research. I learned that acupressure is an ancient form of healing art, originally formed in India and developed in Japan as Shiatsu massage. There are a number of acupressure points throughout the body, known as meridians, that can improve blood flow, release tension, and enhance or unblock life-energy, or “chi”.
All of this sounded fine an dandy, but would a little mat relieve all my issues?
I decided to give the Spoonk mat a try while my son had his “tummy time”….
As you can see from my photos, the mat looks quite sharp and not comfortable at all. But, the pressure points were not as terrible as they seem. (I’m not going to lie, the first time you lay on one you might find it slightly uncomfortable. But you get used to the sensation quickly.)
After about 15-20 minutes of laying on the Spoonk mat, I began to feel more relaxed. The little spikes quickly started to increase circulation, which began to warm my body and calm my mind.
Once you get used to the mat, they say you can work up to longer durations of time. As well as changing positions for different treatments, depending on your personal needs.
While I am new to acupressure mats and not a “pro”, I would recommend the Spoonk mat for anyone looking to reduce stress and relax muscles. My sciatica has diminished slightly over the past few weeks, but the main thing I have noticed from the mat is feeling more mentally and physically relaxed.
