    Butter vs Margarine

For anyone who is not sure what to buy when it comes to butter versus margarine,  you may be surprised with some of the facts I have found.

For anyone who is not sure what to buy when it comes to butter versus margarine, you may be surprised with some of the facts I have found.

Everyone has their own preference, and I'm sure we’ve probably all heard the countless debates about which is better for you.  But, with endless choices on the store shelves it’s hard to know which to choose.  Growing up I always remember having margarine because it was "popular" and doctors were starting to understand the affects of saturated fat more, which resulted in regular butter being a "no no".  But, now a days people discuss the facts of butter being a more natural choice and less chemically modified.  As Joan Gussow once said, "As for butter versus margarine, I trust cows more than chemists."

While I don't want you to feel like I'm giving you free range to smother your food in butter, I do want you to know what is included in both options.  It is a slippery slope when it comes to debating both products.  I have found people get very defensive for either side.  Either way, I wanted to list some facts for each product...some are good, some are bad. It's not so much a question of which is healthier, but which is less bad for you.  You make the choice for your family/lifestyle and feel free to let me know your thoughts or opinions.

    BUTTER:

    • Minimally processed. (No Preservatives, additives or GMOs)
    • Rich in Vitamins & Minerals
    • Boost immune system
    • High in saturated fat
    • It is a pure and natural food, made from milk fat
    • High calorie: Most regular butter sticks contain 100 calories per tablespoon, a typical serving size.

    MARGARINE:

    • Made from vegetable oils (contains unsaturated "good fats")
    • High in trans fats
    • Higher risk of cancer/ heart disease
    • Contributes to hormonal problems
    • Contains artificial colors & flavors
    • Can lower quality of breast milk
