When we first moved into our home, our mudroom was the first project we decided to tackle. With four kids, running in and out of the house, we knew we needed a landing place for all of their shoes and backpacks. My goal was to make it functional AND beautiful.
While we have changed our minds on paint too many times to count...we love the space we created in this otherwise very open, boring entryway from our garage.
Some of our must-haves for creating a built in mudroom:
- Large bench for kids to sit on while they put on/ take off shoes
- Large cubbies/ shelf under bench to hide shoes
- Hooks for backpacks/ jackets
I still can't believe this large amount of space was not turned into a built-in by any of the previous owners. But luckily, we were able to built it exactly like we wanted. With the kids helping along the way!
We started by taping out the size and placement of the bench, and how high we wanted the hooks. Then removed the baseboards so the bench would sit flush to the wall.
Once my husband built the bench, we added some trim to the wall to give it a "board and batten" look.
We finished the project with black hooks and a "Home Sweet Home" sign. (I couldn't find the original sign, but this Amazon version is similar.)
Like I said before, we went through a few different shades of paint before landing on Cromwell Gray. We tried to be brave with a bold color, but it just didn't fit us.
It’s not only a functional space that we use every single day, but also a beautiful spot that matches perfectly with the style of the rest of our home.
