I wanted to create a shared kids’ bedroom that was cosy, simple and budget-friendly. The boys no longer wanted to keep their previous room themes of Dinosaurs and Nautical...which I was totally okay with. Having two separate themes in one room was a disaster.

We decided to keep the walls the same shade of light blue, but to add a white wainscoting behind their beds. Adding DIY wainscoting to any room is an easy way to add elegance to a space. Plus it's an easy DIY project that can be done in a weekend. It's as simple as nailing a few pieces of molding in the right place on your wall.

WHAT TOOLS/ SUPPLIES DO I NEED?

DIY Wainscoting is a project that anyone can do.  You need some really basic tools like a saw, hammer, nail gun, tape measure, wood, caulk and paint supplies.

Depending on the size of your room, you can complete this project in a day....Give or take on how fast the paint dries.

HOW DO I CREATE DIY WAINSCOTING?

To start, we wanted to figure out how many "panels" of wainscoting we wanted along the wall. After we measured, we decided on 6 even sections. This obviously will change depending on the size of your room and how many panels you want.

For the horizontal trim, we used 1x4, the vertical pieces were 1x3. Once the trim was attached to the wall, we added a small piece of 1x2 on top to create a more finished look.

Next, I caulked along all the edges, then primed and painted the trim/wall inside each panel. I love how white wainscoting gives a clean and timeless look.

Last but not least, we added two battery operated sconces over each of their beds. These can be turned on by pressing the light or by using the included remote control. We also purchased matching bedding to create a clean look.

We love how the simplicity of wainscoting can add so much character to a room.  Both of them love their bedroom and I love it too. It feels like a space that will grow with them, not like a random pile of dinosaur and boat items.
