This crusty artisan loaf is loaded with fresh jalapenos, cheddar cheese and is SO easy to make!
I am in love with how great this bread turned out. The texture and flavor is as if it came straight from a bakery. It is crusty on the outside, but soft and fluffy on the inside. Not only is it amazing by itself, but goes great with chili, BBQ or served as sandwich bread.
What ingredients do I need for Jalapeno Cheddar Artisan Bread?
- 3 ½ cups bread flour
- 1 ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 ½ cups sharp cheddar cheese - shredded + additional for topping
- 1-2 fresh fresh diced & sliced jalapeños
- 2 cups warm water
- 1 packet instant yeast
HOW DO I MAKE JALAPENO CHEDDAR ARTISAN BREAD?
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, cheese and diced fresh jalapenos.
Heat water in your microwave for approximately 30 seconds - 1 minute. Add yeast and sugar to the water and stir. Let sit for about 10 minutes, or until it starts to become active and foamy.
Pour the yeast water into the flour mixture. Stir it all together using a wooden spoon or spatula, no need to use a stand mixer. Then fold the dough (using the spatula) in on itself 6-8 times. Cover with plastic wrap or a towel and let rise for 1 hour.
After 1 hr., fold the dough again a couple times, cover and let rise again for another 45 minutes.
Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. (with the Dutch oven inside).
Lightly dust your counter with additional all purpose flour. Place dough on the counter and fold dough a few more times until a ball is formed.
Place the dough on a piece of parchment paper. Sprinkle additional shredded cheese and jalapeno slices on the top of the dough.
Carefully remove the Dutch oven from the hot oven. Place the parchment paper & bread inside of the Dutch oven, cover and bake for 30 minutes. Remove lid and bake for another 10 minutes.
After baking, remove pot from the oven and let the bread cool completely to room temperature on a wire rack.
Should I preheat the Dutch Oven before baking?
Yes, you should place your Dutch Oven (with the lid on) in your oven as it preheats. The hot Dutch Oven will help trap in steam, making the crust of the loaf extra crispy and golden brown.

Have you made your jalapeño bread gluten free?
Julie says
Not this specific recipe. But you can try to use an all-purpose gluten free blend and see how it turns out. It may not be as light and fluffy. Let me know how it goes.
Kathy says
Can I substitute white meat chicken, bacon, and ranch dressing mix for the jalapeños to make chicken, bacon ranch bread? Will it work?
Julie says
I have not tried that. But it sounds delicious! I am not sure if it would work with this specific recipe.
