Looking for stylish and functional entertainment center idea to transform your living room? We were in the same boat. When we first moved into our home, our living area had an enormous blank wall. No fireplace, no character, no charm. Just an outlet in the middle, for a tv to be plugged in.
We knew immediately we wanted to transform the space with a custom built-in that combined stylish storage with function and beauty. As a family of 6, we needed all the storage we could create. Added benches give us the space to hide board games, books, holiday decor and toys. Plus, it gives us additional seating if needed.

We started by purchasing 3 stock cabinets from Lowe's. We installed them along the center of the wall, on a 2x4 base frame. (We cut out the back of one of the cabinets where the outlets lined up. )

Next, Cameron built storage benches on either side of the center cabinets. He added trim around the front of the benches to match the shaker style cabinet doors, so they weren't just flat pieces of plywood.

The top pieces of the cabinet and benches were ¾ inch cabinet grade birch plywood, with added edge trimming to give it a nicer/smoother look.
Once everything was installed, I did my job of wood filling, caulking, sanding, painting and staining.

We originally had the tv sitting on the top of the cabinet, so we drilled a hole for the wires to fit through. Recently, we hung the tv on the wall and added wall trim, which creates a much more finished look.
I completed the project with some decor from HomeGoods.

I think built-ins create so much character without spending a ton of money. Hopefully this will serve as some inspiration, so you can create a custom look, too!
