Follow along and see how we were able to maximize space in our kids closets by designing a simple DIY built in system.

I've been on a major closet organization kick lately! And rather than hiring an expensive installation company or purchasing a closet system, my husband and I decided to build brand new closets for our kids.
So far it’s worked perfectly and their closets are very well organized...we will see how long the kids can keep it like that!
You can follow along and watch the process of building each closet on my Instagram.

DETAILS FOR BUILDING BOTH CLOSETS:
Since every home and closet is different, and closet sizes vary so much, I will give you a simple run down of what we did for their spaces.
We started with our girls closet. They have been sharing a room for a couple years, and their closet has been a storage disaster.

Some of our must-haves for creating their shared closet:
- Plenty of space for hanging clothing including space for hanging longer dresses.
- Cubbies for clothes, toys, books, etc.
- Adjustable shelves to change as needed
- Space along the bottom to store shoes
- Room for a laundry basket
- Hooks for hats or purses

After we completed the girls shared closet, we decided to tackle our oldest son's closet. We opted to keep his dresser in his closet and build the frame of the closet system around it.

We did not create adjustable shelves in his closet, but we did add wider cubbies on top of the dresser, as well as smaller cubbies to the side of the dresser. He now has plenty of storage options for all of his needs.

I’ve decided that building a good closet system may just be one of the most satisfying DIY projects you can do!
