Simple and clean ingredients come together to create the best recipe for Homemade Marinara Sauce. It's the perfect addition to all of your pasta, pizza, and Italian loving recipes!

Recently, a family friend stopped by with a bag full of fresh tomatoes from his garden. Talk about the best score ever! I had tomatoes for dayssss. I put them on salads, eggs, tacos, toast...pretty much anything I could get my hands on. There is nothing quite like a deliciously ripe tomato from a friends garden. (I would totally take anything from a friends garden over a box of chocolates, any day).
Since I could only eat so many tomatoes in a day, and I didn't want all of that glorious fruit to go to waste, I thought of a few different ways to use them up before they went bad. The first being this amazing Homemade Marinara Sauce. It is very easy to make and the perfect way to use up fresh tomatoes. I made a batch and froze a few containers for the future :).

I wanted to keep the recipe light and simple so you can use it many different ways. Feel free to add ground turkey later if you want a meat sauce for your spaghetti, or simply keep it as is and smother it on a crust for the perfect pizza.
HOW DO I MAKE HOMEMADE MARINARA SAUCE?
In a large pot, combine ¼ cup of olive oil, 2 cups of chopped yellow onion and 2 tablespoon of minced garlic. Sauté the ingredients for about 5 minutes, or until onions start to become tender. Next, add the following ingredients and bring everything to a boil for about 5 minutes, then lower to a simmer for 45 minutes - 1 hour.
- 10 cups chopped tomatoes
- 1 cup red wine
- 1 cup chopped fresh basil
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 1 tablespoon dried oregano
Once you have cooked your sauce for about an hour, blend the ingredients with an immersion blender or carefully pour into a blender and pulse until all the ingredients become smooth.
If you used a regular blender, pour the sauce back into your pot and continue to simmer for another 5 minutes or so. At this point if you want your sauce to be thicker, feel free to add a cornstarch slurry (2 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 4 tablespoon water). Keep adding that combination to your sauce until it has reached your desired thickness.
